How to find the right vehicle weighing scales

Choosing the appropriate automotive scales is essential for precise measurement results and efficient workflows. We support you with a broad product range and personalised expert advice.

For maximum flexibility and intuitive operation, the inno!weight® weighing system is a recommended solution. It features wireless data transmission, app-based control, and a lightweight, highly portable design – ideal for workshops, motorsport, and mobile applications. Key selection criteria are:

1. Identify the vehicle type

Different vehicle classes require different vehicle weighing scales and configurations:

  • Passenger cars, vans, motorhomes: Depending on the vehicle weight, mobile wheel load scales from the IFX series or the inno!weight® weighing system are ideal. The ultra-low profile design allows easy drive-on access – perfect for vehicles with low ground clearance, such as lowered cars or motorhomes with body extensions.
  • Trucks, commercial vehicles, agricultural and construction vehicles: For large and heavy vehicles with gross weights of up to 40 tonnes and beyond, Cartesy offers robust truck weight scales and heavy-duty wheel scales, including models such as the BFX-100-LCD-F.

2. Define the maximum gross weight and load per wheel

Selecting the correct measuring range is crucial for accurate results. The key factors are the load per wheel (per weighing platform) and the vehicle’s gross weight, calculated as the sum of all wheel loads.

Our wheel load scales are available with different capacities per platform, e.g. 1,000 kg, 2,000 kg, and 3,000 kg for cars and vans, and up to 10,000 kg for trucks and heavy commercial vehicles.

For motorsport and lightweight vehicles, the inno!weight® weighing system is ideal, offering a total capacity of up to 3,200 kg. For higher vehicle weights or greater wheel loads, modular vehicle scales weighing systems from the IFX and BFX series are available.

Choosing the right capacity ensures reliable readings and protects your automotive scales from overload.

3. Choose the operating environment (mobile or fixed installation)

The intended place of use plays an important role in selecting the right weighing solution:

  • Mobile scales: Battery-powered, easy to transport, and highly flexible for use in workshops or outdoor locations. Ideal for temporary measurements, roadside checks, and changing work environments. Cartesy’s portable vehicle weighing scales and wheel load scales are specifically designed for these applications.
  • Fixed installation scales: Such systems are typically intended for permanent integration into workshops or inspection facilities. Therefor they are not part of Cartesy’s product range.

4. Evaluate data analysis and ease of use

Depending on your workflow, different display and evaluation options may be beneficial:

  • Integrated display: A built-in display allows immediate verification of measurement results without additional devices – ideal for quick on-site checks. All Cartesy wheel load scales in the IFX and BFX series feature a backlit LCD display.
  • PC / app-based analysis: Measurement data can be transmitted wirelessly to a PC, tablet, or smartphone. The inno!weight® software / app provides advanced functions such as live measurements, centre-of-gravity calculation, axle load determination, and the creation of weighing reports in PDF format. Wheel loads remain visible directly on the scale display.
  • System compatibility: Up to ten wheel scales can be connected wirelessly to form a complete vehicle scales weighing system, making the solution ideal for complex weighing tasks involving multiple axles or vehicles.

5. Choose scalability: single scale or weighing kit

Flexible configurations are available depending on your operational requirements:

Single scales:

  • Ideal for straightforward applications or occasional use.
  • Perfect when individual wheel loads need to be measured with minimal setup.

Weighing kits:

  • Comprising multiple wheel load scales, software, wireless receiver, and transport case.
  • Designed for simultaneous measurement of several wheels and precise determination of total vehicle weight.

A modular vehicle scales weighing system allows you to expand your setup at any time – from individual wheel scales to a complete solution.

6. Consider accessories and additional features

Additional components can further enhance measurement accuracy and ease of use:

  • Height compensation elements: Used to level vehicle axles that are not positioned on a scale, ensuring the vehicle remains at a consistent height during weighing (e.g. axle-by-axle measurements with fewer scales).
  • Slide plates: Reduce suspension preload and tyre distortion when weighing on vehicle lifts, resulting in more precise readings from your wheel load scales.
  • Transport cases: Provide safe and convenient transport for mobile portable vehicle weighing scales.
  • Calibration options: Factory and DAkkS calibration available for maximum measurement reliability.

These calibration options are available at additional cost. We are happy to provide sample certificates or further information upon request.

How often should a Cartesy wheel load scale be calibrated?

Calibration frequency depends on the area of application, usage intensity, and your quality requirements.

For most applications, we recommend a 12-month calibration interval to ensure consistently accurate measurement results and standards-compliant documentation.

Can a vehicle be positioned on Cartesy wheel load scales using a vehicle lift?

Yes, this is easily possible. To prevent preload or distortion of the scales caused by suspension movement, we recommend using Cartesy slide plates:

These plates enable stress-free weighing and improve measurement accuracy – particularly for vehicles with performance or specialised suspension setups.

Can I determine my car’s total weight using only two Cartesy wheel load scales?

Yes, the total vehicle weight can also be measured using just two wheel load scales, provided the scales have sufficient load capacity. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Position the front wheels on the scales and record the readings (directly on the display or via the inno!weight® software/app)
  2. Then position the rear wheels on the scales and record those values
  3. Add all four measurement results to obtain the total vehicle weight

Important: The vehicle must stand on a level surface, and the scales should be positioned at the same height.

For optimal measurement conditions, we recommend using the appropriate Cartesy height compensation plates, available in our online shop.

Can I carry out minor repairs on Cartesy wheel load scales myself?

As a general rule, minor repairs should not be performed independently, as this may invalidate the warranty. In the event of damage or technical issues, we recommend contacting our quality department via email or the contact form.

Battery replacement is usually possible after prior consultation. Additional spare parts can be supplied on request.

Are Cartesy wheel load scales legally verifiable (certifiable)?

No, Cartesy wheel load scales are currently not legally certifiable for trade use. They are supplied with a test report as standard and are available with optional factory or DAkkS calibration but do not meet the requirements for official verification.

Why do I need the inno!weight® software?

The inno!weight® software is a powerful weighing and data acquisition solution for Cartesy wheel load scales. It enables fast and precise vehicle weighing – including wireless operation with up to ten connected scales.

The software provides extensive features for measurement data recording, analysis, and transfer and is available for Windows, Android, and iOS. It is included with Cartesy wireless USB receivers.

Is dynamic weighing possible with Cartesy wheel load scales?

Yes. A dynamic weighing mode is available on request for heavy-duty truck weight scales, such as the BFX-100-LCD-F, allowing rolling measurements under defined conditions.
